Well I’ve had a couple of listens now and it’s fair to say that I think I really like it. My reaction so far can be summed up by the following.
First listen = “What the hell was that?”
Second listen = “Wow, awesome.”
On first listen it’s very definitely a bit much, it comes at you from a direction you don’t quite expect. On second listen it’s all started to make a bit more sense and I can really appreciate that this album will take a long time to digest.
Stand out tracks so far are Biko, Signs and Zephyrus. Signs has the best glockenspiel in music ever. Zephyrus somehow manages to sound like something from Final Fantasy VIII and get away with it.
This is definitely one for the good headphones and a bit of a chin stroke.
(Check out my claim for the best glockenspiel in music ever at myspace.)
hmm min. Went on myspace. Listened to signs, found it a bit boring, the glok is nice but to repetitive. Torgan horse wasn’t up to much and neither was month off (think that was it). Seems ok. Probably sounds better as an album than singles. but hey!
I dunno man, I can see this maybe being an album you wouldn’t enjoy as much. I loved Mercury on first listen afterall and you didn’t seem to like it. On first listen it all seemed a little disjointed, but now it makes more sense as an album, so maybe you’re right on that point.
I seen them playing live at reading on the tv. They seem to have taken several steps back. They way the changed all the older songs didnt sound good and they just sounded a bit hollow on a big stage. They are certinaly a band to seen in a small venue (as i did in abdn) but the seem to (dare i say it) got lazy. like they were going through the motions and hoping the visual effects would carry them through. Again, maybe is was a one off but when interviewed at the end they said it was one of their best gigs…….. oh well! :L
I have to disagree, I saw the same gig and thought they were excellent.
Strange how two people can watch the same thing and get something completely different out of it.
You listened to the album yet or just giving it a swerve then?
